Joe Sacco Explores Dark Times

Creative expression isn't for the faint of heart--especially during uneasy times, when creative workers have an important decision to make about whether to engage with or ignore contemporary circumstances. One artist who unflinchingly chooses engagement is comics journalist Joe Sacco. Known for powerful--and highly acclaimed--accounts of contemporary trouble zones, Sacco frequently puts his own life on the line for his art. Although his recent book, "The Great War," delves into a past conflict, it continues to raise crucial questions for writers or visual artists who take their craft seriously. It also asks hard questions of us as readers and viewers.
